This is a pair of programme glasses from late 1950s - early 1960s. They would have been used for reading - not long distance - especially for, say, reading one's programme or menu. They fold up so can be slipped into a handbag. Certainly more stylish than ordinary reading glasses! This pair are in faux tortoiseshell and have aurora borealis glass stones. They are on a cord but could be on ribbon or a chain. Aurora Borealis glass stones were invented by Swarovski around 1955, were hugely popular until mid 1960s. This pair measure - around 4 inches across the lens part, about 2 1/2 inches for the handle - making 6 1/2 inches across when opened out. When folded of course they measure approx. 2 1/2 inches and slip easily into a bag or pocket. They are in good condition. Ref: 2985 B123/36
