From around the 1920's vintage powder compacts became an acceptable accessory to use in public and they were often objects of beauty. The compacts needed to be refilled with loose powder (or the very small ones sometimes used a cake refill). The powder boxes were often quite beautiful themselves and are collected. During the war the packaging was limited and rather boring - but is nevertheless interesting as part of history. When solid powder began to be used - in the 1950/60s (such as Max Factor Cream Puff) the use of powder boxes diminished. I have bought a collection of early powder boxes which will listed as I get the photographs taken.
